Tail Gate Problems

On my 98 F-150, on the left side of the tailgate, where it fits into what I guess was a ball of some type, is completely gone. This is the bottom left hand pivot for the tailgate. Looks like it just rusted away. NAPA has no idea, looks like couple of torx fasteners remove the whole assembly from the bed. Anyone ever repair or replace this? (Nothing like living in the salt-rust belt..LOL)

Thanks.... Spotty

Never had to replace one, but I'd bet it's a dealer or junkyard item.

had a problem with my F250 -1989. seems like i took a 2 inch piece of pipe an inch long and welded it to a flat plate about 2 inches wide and 3 inches long. bolted it to the bed with the two screws you mention and the "plug' on the tail gate fit into it... look at the tail gate end and you will get the idea of what is needed on the bed end.

Steve's right, junkyard or dealer ......... or fellow FTE member.

I'd have to see if this one I have on a damage bed is any good or not.

Thanks guys, looks like a piece of pipe, easy enough to make or junkyard part. Thanks for the picture also.

I would think it would be listed under tailgate hinge.

Thanks for the tip, I'll call the dealer Monday and get a price for a "tailgate hinge". I know it will be more than I want to pay, so I'll either boneyard it or take it off and weld a piece of pipe on it. Doesn't have to be perfect, just strong and so it shuts OK. Thanks again guys.
