I posted on here a few weeks ago that my auto hubs had lasted to 450,000km and I thought that was good performance. I managed to find some good used ones and installed them, but the pass side still would not engage. What I found was it was NOT the fault of the auto hubs. There is a washer with 4 teeth on it that is supposed to grab the notches in the auto hub and help it engage. The splined part of that washer had worn and was allowing the washer to spin around in there, so the auto hub had nothing to grab onto to engage the hub. I put the old hubs back in and will keep my replacements as spares. So now, with 453,000 on the truck, the hub still soldiers on.
Don't give up on your auto hubs until you check that washer!
I gave up on my auto hubs years ago, the reason was that I would be driving down the road and they would lock themselves in, made alot of noises I never want to hear again. I put manuals in haven't had a problem since.
To me its no big deal to get out and lock the hubs, I can switch from 4 wheel to 2 wheel by pulling the lever on the fly. I just make sure of the road conditions before I start driving, if theres a ? I just lock them in.
