Started running bad

1985 F250 460 w/4180. Took on a camping trip and ran fine. On the way home, gassed up both tanks, got 10 miles and started running like crap, won't idle and runs poor at low throttle, no problem at medium to full throttle and makes no difference which tank I'm using. Nursed it back home 500 miles and several more fill ups, removed and disassembled carb, looked clean except for throttle bores that had a heavy, soft wax type build up. Cleaned everything inside and out, ran perfect for 5 miles then started running bad again. If I manually close the choke it runs better but I checked all vacuum hoses and gaskets and all are good....any ideas? It's in the shop now, they are going to drop the side tank for a look-see.

I'm leaning towards water in the system too. I usually change out the brass inlet filter every 10-12 K miles. After I get this problem squared away, I'm going to add an additional fuel filter somewhere in the system.
