I recently bought a 92 F150 with the 300 in it, the former owner stopped driving because oil pressure dropped when warmed up all at once no probs before that.I started the truck and let it run for approx an hour and pressure was good, drove it home about 6 miles lost presure right when I got home, needle was quivering like it had run out of oil, lifter clatter etc.No knocking. So I figures with 200,000 on the clock maybe the oil returns are plugged and pumped the pan dry.Went out the next day and started her up -no pressure what so ever the oil should have drained back in that time I would guess? Also the former owner added flush and new oil change with a Fram filter, wondering if the filter could have clogged?I think on this engine the bypass is in the filter? so if it is clogged could cause this?Any help appreciated.
The screen on the oil pick-up in the pan could be clogged, or the oil pickup tube could be loose (or bad gasket) where it bolts to the pump. In any event I would not continue to run the engine until I dropped the pan and checked it out. This engine could have a lot of life left in it, but it will be greatly shorteded if you continue to start it up starved for oil. Hope this helps find the problem. Let us know how it goes.
Check the oil pressure with a real after market oil pressure gauge. I prefer the mechanical oil pressure gauges. The oil pressure sending unit is on the drivers side of the block just behind the dipstick. Check there and see what you get for oil pressure. The stock needle in the dash just uses a electric sending unit but you really have no clue what it is with the stock needle.
I'm going to drop the pan and replace the pump and pickup just for peace of mind. Been looking for a truck like this one for to long to take a chance. My first 300 was in a 1978 F100 that had 350,000 miles on her before the roof, floor etc. rusted completely out.Man i miss that truck.I bought a 2002 chevy and then a 2004 chevy and they were nice cars with a bed but couldn't bring myself to use em like a truck. Way to much coin involved so I got rid of em and waited till I found this old girl.My old 78 would hibernate all winter when racing season started I hooked up the trailer, pumped her a couple of times and down the road we went. That old truck NEVER let me down and I'm hoping for the same out of this one.thanks for the advice appreciate it.
Been there, done that twice. (once just about a month ago). Most likely clogged pickup. No fun to change, but simple and not too expensive. Went ahead and did new pump and pickup as well as all cover gaskets.
