check the idle air control on the fuel system. it is probably dirty and needs cleaning. you can also check resistance with an ohmeter to see if it is functioning correctly.it should read about 15 ohms.
this unit is attached to the throttle body, and looks like a little cylinder with a plastic electrical connector on it.if this isn't the problem, check tps.
also, you might just need good tune-up.
I am no mechanic, but I have had similar problems. My guess is that it is either the catalytic converter or the fuel filter. If the catalytic converter becomes clogged enough, the back pressure will be so great that no exhaust can leave the engine, causing it to stall. It runs at higher speeds because the exhaust is pushing harder and is forced through the clogged converter, but when you slow down the force diminishes and the engine stalls. I owned a Saab with this problem. It started hard and at points on the expressway wouldn't go over 50mph. Eventually, the back pressure became so high that it blew the exhaust apart at the exhaust clamps just before the converter. I removed the converter and never had another problem. I also owned a '72 bronco with an 83' Ranger body with a 302 that would stall sometimes and start hard. It acted as if it was overheating because it only did it a slow speeds and in stop and go driving, but temp. gauge never went up. I later found the problem to be the fuel filter starving the engine of gas, so that it was running to lean. I replaced the filter and it ran better than ever. I hope this information is helpful.
