Hey. I have a 93 F-150 with a I-6 300 with 138000 miles on it. What would be the best way to get a little more "zing" out've it with paying out the big bills. Will a K&N really help out that much?
Well that's the problem, you can't pay a little bit and get more horses. :-) I just installed the MSD box, wires, and coil, and it gave me decent power gains, but nothing astonishing. I also went to an open element airfilter, and felt a little bit, but it still wasn't astonishing. Most bolt on mods, like the ones mentioned above, help your truck run smoother and more efficient. Power is usually just a really nice by product. The cheapest thing you could probably do would be installing a cam?? Then you can also install roller rockers, eliminate all friction, it will help the engine work better. You might even gain a few horses. ;-)

The biggest bottleneck in the stock EFI 300 are the stock 12#/HR injectors, which are only capable of supporting 151.2 hp(in a 300) and cause the 300 to run in a lean condition most of the time(they even have a knock sensor, and the computer does retard the timing.) You can replace them with 19#/HR units from a V8 that will suport up to 205.2 hp, but, you need to install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, so you can cut down the fuel pressure, the stock setup runs the 12# injectors at 55 psi, the equivalent with the 19# injectors is 30 psi(I think you'd need to cut it back to 30 psi to pass emissions..) I'm running my 19# injectors at 40 psi, and the difference in power is substantial. More info on the AFPR installation is avalable at http://www.thepcshopper.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002289.html
With that bottleneck gone, any other modifications will be more effective, as the engine won't be starved for fuel, even with a stock cam, the engine is capable of more than 150 hp, but it simply doesn't have the fuel

On the subject of those injectors, I read that before on another site, but that install process sounds REALLY involved, finding steel stock and drilling it and dealing with high-pressure fuel lines etc. how would a novice like me (most i've done is swapped upper and lower intakes on my 5.0) go about installing an adjustable fuel pressure regulator?
