I just bought a 351M that was in a 1978 4 wheel drive for $200. I have a 351M in a 1977 one ton flat bed that ,I think, has a broken ring and has very low oil pressure. So I thought for $200 I could take a chance . So what i want to know is what do i need to check on the 78m engine to be able to tell if it has any more life in it or do i need to just re build it since it is already out of the truck..

pull valve covers, pull oil pan check for sludge, pull main caps check bearings, especialy the rear cap,if all checks out good put a new high volume oil pump in, prob new timing chain, rear main seal, and some new gaskets, you should be good to go.

The high volume pump is not necessary and can do damage never mind needing a huge oil pan.
There is an fix for the oiling system on this engine.
