Well, pulled the dash to install double din stereo, relocated the reverse sensor button to make room for LED toggles. Those will power on and off the amp, fogs and inverter. Got my box about ready for behind the back seat with three 10"s.
Amp wiring next....few progress pics.
How hard was it to install a DD radio? From what I have read before...on the '99-'04 SD's...the size of the current opening is smaller than a DD. Where did you do the trimming?
Its not too hard at all. They make a installation kit to fir these years for double din and it requires trimming around the opening. once you get the trim piece for the radio on, the trimmed areas are hidden.
Where your switches are.. I've never looked behind there, is there a lot of room? I was thinking bout some switches there on a plate.. But was curious bout space..
Your din install looks good.. We had to cut the bottom piece off mine that goes across bottom of the stereo.. Wouldn't fit with my Pioneer AVHP6800DVD.. Lil trim to the dash cover and it went in fine.. Other then the missing install kit at the bottom..
Stereo looks odd, get us a shot with it on if you can.. That's a crazy looking JVC model UFO like LOL
Yes lots of room behind those plates where my switches are...
JVC not my favorite brand, but I wanted 2-Din, Bluetooth, USB and Aux ports, MP3 player, and a Mosfet internal amp, 2 sets of pre-amp. This one had everything for $250...and it has a spectrum Anylizer which I like alot more than the swimming dolphin crap they make now-a-days.
AH YES! The joys of Manual Transfer Case.. I love mine... I dont have to worry bout a vacuum line busting or not working when I need my 4WD the most :-P
Sure I gotta get out and turn hubs, but thats what keeps me young and fit LOL
One question, why have a toggle to turn the amp off and on? Why not just wire it into an ignition-on wire?
Looks good though, nice and clean install!
Two reasons..
1) Ensure no voltage draining
2) Some cities/states have regulations with sound. Here in Texas, especially in the cities it's illegal to have a stereo going very loud, even bass thumping. So the switch allows you to instantly kill the amp without fumbling with the volume down.. I plan to wire mine up the same once I finish my parts..
Don't most amps these days have a low voltage cut-off (where they won't turn on below a certain voltage threshold)? I haven't bought an amp in years but my 10 year old PPI amp has one.
2nd point is definitely legitimate, would be a quick way to kill the noise... I guess I didn't think of that, my stereo has an attenuator button on it (which is on the remote as well). Pull up to the light and hit the button, kills the volume significantly.
I can kill the amp/subs instantlly...wether a cop is nearby, pulling into the house late, or have a child seat in back. no fumbling around on the radio controls
The OEM head unit didnt come with a remote 12V amp turnon capability.
So have mine connected via a switch too.
this way, the front speakers are connected direct from the head unit and the rear with sub is via amp.
at 1st i thought this was a temp solution but once I got used to it i am sure that is is better that auto turn on for the amp. even when i will switch for a newer head unit.
this way I can cut off the noise when my son is sleeping in the back seat.

You actually only need a ignition switched wire (doesn't need to be specific to the radio), any will do since this wire only turns the amp on and off, no other power is pulled from it.
Good ideas though, maybe in my next truck I'll set up something similar, but for now, my 3 boys will have to be drown out by 1200 watts of power...

YEahh, and let your amp live for about a week...
the ignition brings SO MUCH electrical noise in, and most amps wil not handle it for long. you will heasr a thump every time you turn on the motor, until one time you wont...
if your'e lucky it is a fuse...
