It says, "Engine Oil - 10W"

Since I recently (within the last few months) got my '64 on the road, I've been doing the usual routine maintenance, getting the truck back into good shape.

In the shop manual, it instructs you to lube several components such as the knuckles and joints with "Engine Oil - 10W". I've never seen anything on the shelf labeled just '10W', instead always that followed by 30, 40, you know...

So what is it? And what should I be looking for? I'm not knowledgable on the entire oil weights and numbering...

There is a 10W motor oil out there. It maybe hard to find. I have some made by Pennzoil. I have an air compressor that uses it. You will probably have to ask for it. I have not bought any in several years. I cannot remember where I got it at. You can also do a little research on motor oils on the net. There is probably a suitable substitute. http://www.answers.com/topic/motor-oil-2 This site goes into oils in considerable detail. You may want to check it out.

Hey thanks for the link, it did actually help me figure out some of this stuff. Thanks a lot. I'll ask for it next time I'm in the local Advance Auto!

I am glad it was helpful to you. You should post some pics of your truck in your gallery. It is always good to see what someone else is working on and to share the progress.

Matt, Going from memory, and don't know how accurate your reference is, but your truck was built before multi weight oil. What was most common was straight 30 wt. for engine, and 90 wt. for trannys and rears. 10W40 or 10W30 have been used for years. It has only been recent that 5W30 and 0W5 synthetic oils have come on the scene, and to be used in engines built much much different than the one in your truck.

We now have gear heads running 20W50 because they think they are getting something more. No one has proved either 10W40 or 10W30 as being bad for the older engines, but thicker is better.

I think the only reason that some of us use the 20w50 is because ther has been research that states that the newer oils have a reduced zddp content(zinc content). from what i have read, the content is like .05% in the newer oils, where as oils like Valvolines VR1 20w50 and rotella 15w40(desiel oil)and delvac delo still has the higher content of zinc. the content for these oils are like .15%. that might be the reason that some of us use the 20w50.

Spot On! there is a detailed thread in "gear head forum" that has tons of good reading on this. I use Castrol's 15/40 as the Rotella formula has changed and the bottles on the shelves in my area already show the energy conservingy symbol.

As top the oil for general lubing (10w) I found 15w to go in my oil bath so surely the oil is out there..

Same crowd that has to buy and drink water from a bottle, because tap water is no longer good enough, after having been for eons.

You know, after the research on Sorry A$$ Fram oil filters that caused us to stop using them, they are still very popular on the shelf and I haven't read or heard of a massive melt down of engines because of them failing.

Getting rid of lead in gasoline probably has been one of the best things for the life of vehicles and their drive trains.

Spend your money and pay twice the price for designer oil if you must, but until you can prove that the old standard is causing failures, tone the rederick down a bit, because I am gonna call it for what it is, BULL.

So then what would be the best oil for a 292 in a 64?

Best is in the eyes of the beholder. 10W30 is still readily available and has worked well for years.

Yeah I use 10W30 in the engine. I just wasn't sure what '10W' single-grade oil was.

Matt, For kicks & giggles, would you go back and look to see if it is 10W?

The only time that I recall the W being used is like 10W40 or 10WXX not just 10W.

thanks
