92 F150 4X4 Ext cab 5.8 auto, about a month back my wife started the truck, it ran for about 10 seconds and died. It would crank over just fine but not start. I though there was an under dash short, and after taring apart the dash I finally found a buned up fog light switch. In trying to start the truck again I noticed the fuel pumps weren't running when you turn the key on. I checked the relay but it was working. While looking through the owners manual with the key on, the pump came on all by themselves. I tried starting it and sure enough it started. It's running pretty rough and blowing alot of black smoke out the exhaust. Now when you turn on the key the pumps will keep running instead of running a few seconds and then shuting off. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator but that had no effect. I'm not sure where to look next. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
You may be right. I failed to mention that when I connected my code reader it wouldn't do anything but give out a constant beep. Couldn't even get it to do a KOEO test. I was afraid I might hear this. Is there any way to tell for sure?
There is no test for the Computer that I know of even at a dealer (from the feed back we get on the posts).
You can only go by the symptoms and you have all the symptoms that say it is bad.
Of course this is not 100% but about 99 times of 100 it is the case but oddities do come up from time to time.
We can only go with the odds when someone asks about a problem but do get blind-sided sometimes.
If you take it anyplace with those symptoms the first thing they are going to do is replace the Computer.
Thanks Bill. I was pretty sure that might be the problem, but it's good to hear it from someone else.
You should be able to pick one up at a salvage yard for about $30 to $50.
Just make sure it is from a truck with the same:
1. Transmission
2. Engine
3. Ignition (push-start or CCD), yours is push-start with Gray ICM.
4. Air system (MAP or MASS)
5. Same fuel system, MFI or SFI
6. As close to the same year as possible
7. Same program code if possible (do not go by the Ford part number unless you are getting a new one from Ford or a parts store).
You were right Bill K, I finally had the time to pull the computer. Took it apart and there it was, bigger than Dallas. A melted spot the size of a quarter. I guess that was the burning plastic smell. LOL Got NAPA trying to locate me another. Thanks again for the help.
