I have a 2001 F250 and am thinking of installing an exhaust brake. What are the cons to doing this? My truck has been VERY good to me and I haven't had any problems with it EVER. I was told by somebody that an exhaust brake will screw up my valves, is that true? I pull a 37ft fifth wheel camper up and down the mountains in Tahoe CA and by the time we hit the bottom the brakes are smoking and I'm a nervious wreck because I have my family with me and don't want anything to happen. I've been pulling a trailer for five years now up and down and have upgraded the brakes but this last trip this guy pulled out in front of me and I had to go to the shoulder of the road. I'm ready to have the brake installed but want some advise on if it will mess up my motor. ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks. Bill
An exhaust brake will not "screw up your valves". You can damage an engine if the exhaust brake builds up too much pressure, but a well engineered system will prevent this from happening.
Your application sounds like a prime candidate for an exhaust brake.
Here is a real good article from Banks explaining what the exhaust brake does, the advantages, disadvantages, and why a diesel engine needs one but a gas engine doesn't.
I agree, the most common comment I hear when I talk to guys that have ran an exhaust brake for a while is "why did I not use one sooner" they really work great! I am not gonna sit here and tell you which brake to buy or that ours is better than the rest but I will say buy an exhaust brake, they work great and like mentioned already a good engineered kit will not harm the motor in anyway!
If your rig is an automatic you will need a transmission controller and there are a few to choose from. As you do your homework you will find there are more things to consider other than which brand to go with.
If you have and questions on transmission controllers, turbo mount brakes vs remote mount brakes, air actuated versus vacuum actuated brakes etc... let me know.
Of course, you should purchase from an FTE sponsor if possible. I wasn't endorsing or recommending Banks, just pointing you to an article that is very informative.
k9hotrod--I too go to Tahoe and use I80. The summit can be really harsh on brakes. An exhaust brake works really well in these down hill descents. It will hold my truck back and keep the same speed or slow it down depending on grade and load. It works best at high rpm's. I have heard that they don't work quite as well with an auto trans but they still help. It gives me a little piece of mind when trailering my horses.
