Continued to notice my truck lag / chug along in the mid-range of the throttle. Idles fine....wide open fine....anything in between, especially at highway speeds...seems to stuggle.
Had a CCT done today. Code PO 284 - Clyinder 8 balance
They said #8 (the long lead injector) was showing bad on 2 consecutive tests. Also suspect 3,4 and 5. Injectors are ~$130 each. Labor is $270 per side of the engine. I know I need to replace #8. I figured I would replace all 'bad' ones on that side. Tech recommended to replace all at same time...or at least all 4 on that side (since they are under the valve cover for $270 already.
So....what to do? I mentioned that I have a 'little' fuel in the water. They said they would do a pressure test first to make sure I didn't have an injector cup leaking. If so....who different deal ($$$) to resolve. They said heads must come off to repair. True?
Should I notice an immediate performance difference replacing the poor #8 and the 3 others on that side?
if you know #8 is bad i would just replace that one! its not hard to take off that valve cover!and u can reuse the valve cover gasket! is your truck shaking on throttle!
The #8 always shows poorly in a stock truck. Just the way it is in the fuel rail and the firing order with 6 and 8 with the LL injector. Who did the test? I have a hard time believing a whole bank will fail all at once. Sounds like a harness/wiring problem to me.

This is probably the root cause of your entire problem. I am not sure you need to pull the heads to replace the cups, but I know there is a tool for it, so someone else may chime in. I do know if you pull the heads you will be out new head gaskets. Might want to price those and compare to their labor/job charge. Whole different ball game there. Gonna need new injector rings too.
Whole bank didn't fail. 3,4,5 and 8 showed poorly. Especially #8 apparrently. Of course they recommended replacing all of them while we were in there. I, of course, don't want to spend that much $$ at one time right now. So...I figured could replace #4 and #8 on drivers side....or for anotehr $270 go ahead an do all 4 on drivers side.
even numbers are drivers side odd numbers are pax side. If you have fuel in your water you need to see about a cracked cup first, then worry about the injector.
BTW, if 4 different injectors showed bad, then why would you only replace two of them. thats like wipin before you poop.

The primary thinking there was trying to save the additional $270 in labor for the 2 bad ones on the passenger side. Honestly...I think I should only 'have' to replace #8 but figured to either replace the other bad one on that side...then thought might as well do all on that side (maybe a dumb idea). Would make sense to do all at once but would be talking about $1,600 labor and all.

Do you have tools and a general mechanical knowledge? if so, save the install cash, and buy the 8 injectors for $1040, and replace them yourself. here are the instructions http://www.beansdieselperformance.co...torinstall.htm , really its not that hard just time consuming. Also does not take any Specialty tools. there is another member who just recntly did a injector cup replacement at home.
