I am having a problem with carburetor icing, at least that's what I think it is. Symptoms include running real rough, no power, not idling. Shutting the truck off for a couple minutes and then restarting works, but is not too handy sometimes. Everything under the hood is stock and in place. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?
Sounds as though the flapper in the neck of the breather is not closing. Its vacumn operated and when closed draws air from around the passenger side exhaust manifold. On top of the breather you should have a vac line comimg up from below to the lid and another going from the lid to a vac pot on the neck. If you have enough vac line coming from below, bypass the lid and go directly to the pot on the neck. So long as the pot on the neck is working this should solve your problem. It will keep the flap closed at all times so you may want to change it back come warmer weather.
I bet that this only happens when the weather is real damp and chilly or borderline rain/snow. Black smoke belches out of the tail pipe and the engine chugs until it dies. The more you floor the gas pedal the worse it gets. Sitting with the engine off for 5 minutes will thaw out the carb and the frost/ice that's around the carb base.
Check your EGR valve and the vacuum lines. I have the same problem because i removed my EGR valve and covered it with a steel plate. I have had to learn to live with the iceing problem. Keep as much as possible of the emmission control plumbing in place. Good luck, and pray for warm weather!

Wow, hood, every word of that describes my problem! I've got so I can predict when it will happen by looking at the temp. and dewpoint before I leave.
A couple of weeks ago I unhooked and plugged the vacuum line from the EGR valve. But I did experience the icing problem before, so I don't think that's the problem.
The guy I bought my truck from had the same problem. He got an extra long length of heater hose and put a loop around the carb in the hose from the water pump to the heater core.
It ain't pretty but I don't have any problems.
I've been thinking of replacing it with a 3/8" copper tubing but I need to get some fittings made up to connect the tubing to the 5/8" hose.
