Hey Folks,
This truck is only the second Ford truck I ever owned. First one was a 78 F150 I had for many years and 300,000+ miles. (good old truck). My wife had a 92 Bronco we ran for 100,000 without any major issues.I have been floating around here since just before I got the truck in my sig.
All I ever read is the bad things about these trucks. I'm beginning to get a comlex and thinking I got a pile of junk. I read comments like "the e40d will blow up", "Terrible mileage" which I found out, "bad front ends","computer troubles", you get the picture. Of course I understand that people usually post up when they are having problems but I'm beginning to think that the whole country is full of problem Ford trucks. So far I have been pretty happy with this truck but I won't get to put it to the test until next camping season.
Help me feel better about my truck. Let me hear the good news you guys have like I went 200,000 miles and only had to change the alt. Never have to do anything but oil changes and tires.
I need my glass to be half full not half empty. Tell me why we drive these trucks.
My dad has a 1997 350 5.8, E4OD. from the day it came from the factory it has been carrying about 2.5 tons every minute of everyday. Right now it sits at about 360,000 miles!!!!! We have only had to put in minor things, the only major repairs have been water pumps, but this is a catering truck and they all go through them fast chevy dodge or ford, (But ford seems to use less than the others).
My First truck was a 1981 f100 with a 4.6? When I bought it it had no oil and a whole in the oil pan dumping everything you put in it. I DROVE about 15-20 miles home and then about .75 miles each day for a weak until I got a 302 engine lined up for it. During that time it was (I am dead serious) and 8 cylinder runing on 6, sometimes 7 with absolutely NO OIL!!!!
Remember that excluding the general conversation and regional forum sections, the main reason people post here is with questions and problems, so you only see the bad not the good. You rarely see a thread discussing the many great qualities of the trucks.
Your only seeing the trouble spots because this is a place where Ford Truck Enthusiasts gather to help and share info.
I could and im sure everyone else on this site could, tell hundreds of great stories about my trucks where they have saved mine and others *****, and any number of other positive things.
Perhaps we ought to start an "I love my Ford truck because _____" thread
my friend bought a 1992 f-150 302 with 380,000 miles!!! about 5 years ago although he only drove it for a year (than he got a new jeep) it currently has about 10 hp with the original engine and it had a trans about 60k ago! when he got it he rebuilt the rear end for obivious reasons, but im not sure why he wanted to put time and money into a truck with that many miles.. i think it was a father son thing..
it has many little problems which is expected but it will still make a fair farm truck i wouldn't drive it more than a mile though....
it was owned by an old man from new which explains a lot.
Even though I have been mostly a Chevy guy I think the 80 to 96 Ford is the best all around pick up ever made. I have owned an 83 and 94 and have had an 87 and 92 work truck. These models are relatively easy to service and seem to last a long time. The 92 and 94 have the 300, the 83 had a 302, and the 87 had the 351. All were 2wd. IMHO the 92 to 96 are the best models but my 83 was better looking. The 87 had some issues with the dual tanks and fuel pumps and never got more than 11 mpg but it was a F250 and pretty beat when assigned to me.
My 83 made it to 220k with its orignal powertrain (302 AOD) and made me a believer. My current 94 is a 300 with 180k and runs great.

rikard
my dad had a 86 bronco with a 300 I6, put 250k miles on it himself with no major work on the engine at all, just the typical oil changes.
i myself have a 94 f150 flareside with 181k on it and an E4OD tranny, no problems at all (except my current 4wd hub issue)
Just keep up with your normal maintnence such as oil changes, tires, fuel filters etc and you will be fine. The E4OD shouldnt give you much hassle, mine hasnt, although it had been rebuilt when it had 154k on it, but the newer of them are ok.
I started with Ford with my '89 F-350. It was a crew cab dually that I used to haul a 42' horse trailer with all over the western states with. Fully loaded the rig weighed 34.000 pounds. I had to get a class A license to drive it. But the 460 with a 5 speed pulled that trailer up and down places like the Grapevine, Ashland hill, the Cajon pass, and many others I can't remember. How many of you have ever tried to haul a trailer up a 21% grade? There is such a hill (luckily a short one) between Moab and Mexican hat near the Utah/Arizona border.
I upgraded the '89 to a '95 with the same driveline, and drove the hell out of it. Then I got rid of the trailer and the dually and bought a '95 250 4x4, which I took out on back roads across the country. I modified the 5.8 with Mass Air, headers, MSD, and Edelbrock heads.
I decided I wanted something that could pull a little more weight, so I traded in the 5.8 truck for a '95 250 4x4 with a PSD. I'm at 160k miles now, and it runs as well as when I first bought it. Nothing has been replaced other than the serpentine belt, oil, and filters. The difference in price between the 5.8 and PSD has been more than made up for with the improved fuel mileage.
My favorite truck of all time still has to be the one I drove before leaving for the Army, my old '53 Chevy.
I have a 94 F-150, 300 cid, E4OD, 3.55 traction lock rear end, chrome everything, stereo cassette, fabric interior, tilt, cruise, and about 154K miles. I've replaced the battery, tires, wiper blades, radius arm bushings with neoprene, the alternator, the air pump/ alternator bracket and added a couple hose clamps as necessary. It does have a dash squeek, and I'll fix that shortly. I've pulled way more than what a rational man would with anything using this truck, carried kids cross country in the back. Moved six times. Used it to pull a lawn mowing trailer and equipment for about the first 40K miles putting the bread on the table. Pulled my son's car home numerous times before he finally gave up on the BMW thing, as he is now driving a Ford. Trailer a friends 2002 Dodge p.u. to the dealer twice. Given jump starts to dozens of folks in need. And gone camping with a tent. Pulled an RV 27 footer trailer. Traveled cross country from Texas to the east and back several times.
It has always done the job that I have needed with no regrets, and never failed to complete the job.
And to top it all off, the truck looks to be about two years old after never having been garaged. Never had any body work or paint done to it either. Besides, my wife likes to drive it if I need to take her car or do maintenance on her car while she's at work. Why wouldn't a guy like it?
"BUILT FORD TOUGH"- it's not just a slogan!
