I'm looking at buying a 2000 Ford F250 7.3 auto with 220,000 miles. The truck is well taken car of but I'm pretty sure that the tranny has never had rebuild. I know he changes the fluid and filters religeously and he is the second owner of the truck. If I buy this truck should I be afraid to throw on a Dp tuner? Also the 4r100 has no issues and my friend has towed 10k pounds with the truck but what do you guys suggest with making the tranny survive. I've read to put a bigger tranny cooler on it but what else?! Thanks in advance!

IMO...with 220,000 on a 4R100 tranny is pretty good. Keeping the 7.3L PSD all OEM stock is my best advice for having the tranny live. There are several known issues with the 4R100 in stock form...visit this site and read up on the differences...from OEM stock to aftermarket rebuild. (Monster Box and Stock Comparison)...
So If I decide to get the truck just keep it stock and tow with it for a year while saving for an upgraded 4R100?! He needs to unload it so maybe I'll make a deal with him that if the tranny goes within a year he has to pay for half of a new Tranny!! He's only asking $10,500 for it and its clean. Thanks for the help!
You should have a problem upgrading it with a DP tuner, although if you do make sure you get guages first, tranny and PYRO, 4" exhaust, new intake most like the 6637 or AIS, then get a BTS valve body(don't get a banks controller) and if your going to pull heavy loads you will want to get a bigger tranny cooler. Now after you have done all this you can get a DP tuner. But there are many trannys out there with DP tuners that are just fine. Just make sure you don't overheat it, and change fluids regularly and you should be fine. I wouldn't worry to much about the 4r100, its a great transmission, not as good as the torqueshift, but you can't have everything. Just do the support mods first, and you shouldn't have any problems.
Thanks! Very good info! A couple more questions...Where can I purchase a Bts valve body kit and what should I expect to pay for it? Also do you have any info as what tranny cooler to go with and what they run?
Sorry...cannot help with exact cost, but remember something in the $240+ range.
A really good upgrade mod for the 7.3L PSD and 4R100 tranny is going with a '05-'07 OEM 6.0L PSD tranny cooler. Some mods necessary, so do a search in the 7.3L PSD forum...and you will find lots of info.
Looks like the Factory Tech valve body is only going to run $225.00 not bad for crisp shift points! Thanks for the help. I'll have to look into tranny coolers!
sory to hijack but is a valve body worth doing on a truck with almost 100k or should i wait for the trans to go and replace it with a stronger one??
thanks
Replace it now before the tranny goes, 100k is hardly broke in on a truck like this, I would definatly put one in if you have a chip or are pulling heavy loads regularly. There only about $200-300, a very good and cheap upgrade, if you have $4000 just laying around though I would go with a BTS tranny now, or get a BTS VB and if the tranny does go, Brian will give you credit for the VB off of a one of his new transmissions, that way you can't lose. Your always better off fixing problems before they become serious ones and take something else out with them. Many transmissions will last far past 200k, the 4R100 isn't a real common problem, unless you pull a lot of weight every day, or you have a tuner. Otherwise they are normally very good transmissions
