my 76 or 77 truck, whichever it may be, has a straight six
that doesn't match the description in the manual (haynes).
i discovered this while changing spark plugs and wires.
the distributor isn't located beside the second cylinder, as shown, but is between the third and fourth cylinders., on the driver side. the cylinder order is also not the one shown in the book, i mean the order in which the wires come off the cap.
i'm wondering where on the block, if at all, would a number be
stamped that would help identify this motor? if it helps, the
valve cover is stamped "Power by Ford." thanks.
The fact that is has a Ford valve cover is a big plus in this instance. If it's the stock engine it should be a 300 six, as this was the only engine (6 banger) offered in trucks during those years. It is possible although not likely that it's a 240 six. The 240 was replaced by the 300 (although they were produced at the same time for awhile). If I remember correctly the 300 was a bolt in swap for the 240, and the 300 was referred to as a big block six. It's most likely a 300 though.
the firing order is on the intake manifold.
what i am worried about is the fact that in my
hayne's manual, the dirstributor is located beside
number 2 cylinder. on the truck, however, the distributor is
in between cylinders 3 and 4. since it can't be moved, what's the deal? is that hayne's fault? also, after replacing plugs and
wires, the engine makes a high-pitched whistle. i tightened the
plugs, but the whistle continued. anyone ever heard of this???!
My '83 had a similar whistling problem. It sounded almost like I had a turbocharger. I plugged off all my unnecessary vacuum lines, and that seemed to stop the problem. Of course my truck probably has a lot more vacuum lines, being that it has pollution control(disconnected). I have a friend who owns a '77 with a straight six. I'll see if I can get a look under the hood, and get back to you on your other question.
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I looked at the engine in my friends '77. His distributor is also located between the 3rd and 4th cylinders, and I know his truck definitely has a 300.
