Air cleaner question

I'm giving some thought to replacing the original air box with an aftermarket air cleaner. I'm picturing a simple chrome housing that sits on top of the carburetor, with the paper filter element exposed all the way around. I'm currently operating without the heat riser anyway, and not experiencing any real problems, since it doesn't get that cold here in Seattle. Has anyone done this, and what were the results? I'm thinking the truck would breathe better, but I don't know if there are any other downsides that I haven't thought of. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to the Ford thing, but lovin' every minute of it.

Air cleaner question

By all means get a nice tall air filter in there. I went & got 1 for my '84. Makes a difference on responce & got a little more out of my gas tank.

Air cleaner question

Would I be increasing the risk of carburetor icing, though? The way I'm currently set up, the original air box is in place, but the vacuum line to operate the "flapper" on the air snorkel is inoperative, so the engine is getting air from the heat riser, and from the plumbing that leads up to the grill. I don't currently have an icing problem, and certainly don't want to start.

Air cleaner question

That has not happened to me (yet). I live in Massachusetts, and it's pretty cold here. My flapper valve isn't the best in the world either. I have noticed the motor responds better. I have had my hi rise on since January.
