Hey all, need to replace the dist. cap/rotor and plug wires on my 90 F150. Anybody tried/used Crane's 8.5mm Fireball plug wires? How about Accel's performance dist. cap and rotor? Found these on the web at carparts.com, but want any opinions first. Thanks.
All the aftermarket caps, rotors, and wires are an improvement over stock pieces. I used to refer to my stock wires as "the light show" because you could pop the hood and watch the boots light up everytime they fired they were so thin.
I like the accel cap+wires, they're reasonable and seem to hold up, make sure you use the dielectric grease to seal the boots as this is a major source of leakage, especially if you drive in salt during the winter, like here in Michigan.
I'm an ole hound willing to learn a new trick...how do you seal the boots with dielectric grease? I drive in dry, windy West Texas where we have no humidity and no salt in winter...the wind blows our snow to "youse guys" before it gets a chance to stick!!!
You follow the instructions on the tube. Put a little inside each of the plug and coil wire ends and a little on each of the plugs and the distributer cap where the plug wires make contact. In dry, windy Texas it will make the wires much easier to remove the next time you do a tuneup. Down there the wire ends tend to become part of the plug and distributer cap and are almost impossible to remove without doing some kind of damage.
Everyone should use it. Anti-sieze on the plug threads is also a nice touch.
