I drive my truck daily for short periods of time (about 10 miles each direction) going 60 in 4wd 5 to 6 months out of the year, I've done this for about 8 years. Even going that fast I have seen other trucks blow by me. Never had a problem with my transfer case or 4wd nor an accident. If your used to driving in snow, ice etc..and you can drive that fast without problems. It's just like anything else the more you do it, the better you get at it
There is another element about using 4wd.
The front wheels are locked togather and it's always possible to get into a road situation and a curve and have the front push out instead of following the curve.
If the speed is to high, you could lose it.
Here is a thought, if you can't drive at a certian speed in 2wd, why would you do it in 4wd. Your still going to have the same stopping distance on the packed snow and ice in a 4wd as a 2wd. If the wheels break loose and your in a spin, it won't matter what your driving.
Don't get me wrong as I have 4wd but I find if I need 4wd to go faster in undesirable conditions, then I am usually going faster than I need to be and wont be able to react to an emergency situation just from a braking standpoint alone.
The transfer case has a spin-up clutch to match the front driveshaft to the rear before engaging the transfer case. This eliminates the clunk when engaging @ 55mph.
