My 76 Highboy has a 428 in it that has never given me an once of trouble in the 1 1/2 years I have had it until now. Always, regardless of the weather, I give the gas a pump or two, turn the key, and VROOOM. That is until now. I just drove it 200 miles for a camping trip, came home and put it in the garage to unload, drove it out 50' away to park and now nothing.
It was raining really hard when I tried to start again and it cranks but would not fire like no spark. I pumped awaile and chocked awhile, but nothing. It did pop once with a puff of smoke coming from the carb. But now it acts like no spark again. I dried the distributor and wires but still no luck
It has been raining here for days and so I haven't had much time to look into it while it is outside. I plan to pull it in the garage today or tomorrow to look it over and try a few things.
Any suggestions or things to look for or try? I really want to have this ready in the event of bad winter weather. Please don't tell me I may have jumped time. I hope it's simple.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks guys for all the help. It does not seem to be turning over any faster. The first day I had trouble I did spray the cap with wd-40 and wiped it dry. Battery started sounding weak so I hooked up jumpers on the Chevy (have mercy on me) for a boost with still no firing. Plugs and wires are at least 1.5 yrs. old. This would be a good time for a complete tune. I do have Dura-spark, so I'll check that.
It stopped raining, but now its cold as heck. I have to get it in the garage tomorrow. I have no help except 2 teenage girls to help push. I'll have to use a come-a-long to get it up the incline at the door.
Thanks again for your responses. I don't mind fixin' as much as troubleshooting.
Update, I put a new rotor and cap on, took the module off and had it tested. Module tested ok so I cleaned all connections, put it back on and it started right away. Will be changing plugs and wires now too.
Thanks for all the help.
