I have a 01 Ford Explorer Sport with starting issues. When I start it up, sometimes it starts with no problems and sometimes it takes a few tries and I cant figure out why it does this. I am not a mechanic so all I can do is guess maybe tune-up I dont know. Any ideas would be gladly accepted. Thank you.
Could be the fuel pump relay. When they start to go bad, they are intermittent then quit altogether. When you turn the key to the on position, do you hear the fuel pump prime for about 1 sec.?
Try this little test before starting your truck. Turn the key to the on position. Listen for the fuel pump to prime. If you hear it prime, start the truck. If it doesn't start, you know it's not the relay. If you don't hear it prime chances are it is the relay. Change it out, about $10 at your local parts dealer. If you continue to have problems after that, could be the fuel pump itself, a bad ground or a clogged fuel filter.
BTW, what's the mileage? Should have your first tune-up around 100k and use original Motorcraft plugs and wires.
I bought it with 121k. It has 145k now so I dont know if it had a tune-up or not. But I do know this problem just started. I even tried to keep the RPM's up so I can put it in gear to drive and that will work but when I take my foot off the gas(even while driving) the RPM's drops and the truck shuts off.

Not sure of the cost, but I think it's somewhere around $150. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. It's super easy to replace though. This should help.
i bought a new iac valve. I see that it comes with a gasket. Is there anything else I need in order to install the new one. I am not a mechanic but it looks easy to do but looks can fool you sometimes.
