2000 explorer

just recently bought a 2000 explorer with 137,000 miles. i have 2 questions.

1st-vehicle came with a 4.10 limited slip and p255/70/r16 tires from factory. gas mileage is about 15 mpg. if i change to a 3.55 or 3.77 do i need to go the 15 inch tires and would i need to change anything in the computer.

2nd-have noticed a hard like shift feeling or chug action. it happens at different speeds and only when roads are slippery. could this be auto 4 wheel kicking in or the rear limited slip. am planning on changing rear lube and adding the additive to see what happens.

as you can tell i am a newbie here. was in forum last night and what i read was a great help.

mao, i think guys are tying to figure out why you want to change the axle ratios. do you want to slow the motor down hoping to get better gas milage? remember you have a gear set in the front and the back-- x2. if you had higher gears, why would you want smaller tires? what is the goal here?

the goal is to try to increase gas mileage. Would rather stay with 16 inch tires just did not know if going to the other gears meant going to smaller tires. Has anybody ever gone from a 4.10 to a 3.73 or 3.55? I have always known a 4.10 to be towing gear. Will not be doing any towing with the vehicle.

I guess what i am wondering is it possible to do this with out changing a bunch of stuff other than the 2 sets of gears?
