After removing my turbo I ckecked end play and it was in spec but seems to have a lot of up and down play. The manual I have dose not give specs for radial play. Any idea what it can be???
As long as the turbine and compressor wheels don't touch the housing when you check radial play, it's alright. There needs to be some movement there because the shaft floats in oil when the engine is running.
Mine on my Dodge did that, and it actually made contact with the housing. You could get a rebuild kit, and that should take care of most of it, unless the shaft is worn too.
Would it need a rebuild if its not hitting? The truck has 112,000 miles on it.
not sure about '94 turbos but my 2000 the worst play was from I think 7 oclock to 1 oclock position or the oposite
it had enough wear at 60k that it didn't work good and at about 114k started hitting the housing,so yes at 112k it could very well need rebuilding
Its done. But guess what. The rebuild did nothing for side play. It took the end play down to .001 but the worst sideplay was .018 TIR. And after some looking I just cant seem to get someone to peg dow the sideplay specs for my turbo. You can get oversize bearings to bring the play down to specs but what the f!@k are they!!!!!! I did the rebuild, its in the truck, every thing seems to be ok, but it bugs the crap out of me to know everything may not be perfect. And we all know what will happen if the wheel hits the housing. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
