You have to have a long extension on a ratchet, you have to get it all the way on the end of the starter, even then you can't turn it much, but you just have to sit there and do it slowly. I recommend leaving one of the other bolts in, then you won't be holding the weight of the starter on the one thats so hard to get out, if you take it out without the starter holding weight against it its alot easier.

Yeah it is a b*tch. I found that using a 6 point socket on a long extension works well. I am running a gear drive starter which is a little more compact. The head of the bolt only lets you get on it about 3/16 of an inch so you have to keep pressure on the socket while you are removing it. Patience and hold your mouth just right will get it out. Going back in is also fun. Good luck.

I have seen several Nippondenso gear reduction starters on 6.9's.

If you have this starter the only way to remove the top bolt is with a short wrench.
Replace it with a Mitsubishi gear reduction starter so you can use a rachet to remove the top bolt.

dave thanks for nippo tip present starter is mitsu referred to as a 28mt in 91 delco catalog orig starter when i purchased truck was a non reduction delco 22 27 mt 15+ yrs ago. [diff being 22= 750 a soldered arm 27=1000 a welded avail in cw or ccw 12 or 24 ] having used these on industrial apps they will tolerate "dc welder jumpstarts" where the imports g/r are not designed to except such abuse. i lost orig on a the road swap xchange. other then imports are whats available can you gimme some solid input many thanks
