Had a problem with the 4x4 in the driving in snow sucks thread. Now im not so sure its even in 4 wheel drive. I have the ESOF and it says its in but Im not so sure. How do I tell for sure?
I also only have defrosters. I have read that these are connected to a vacuum leak. True?
Very true. You have a leak in your vacuum system some where. The vacuum is what controls the blend door and what operates the auto hubs. If your defroster works ok until you switch the ESOF, then the leak is in the lines below the 4x4 solonoid, or a bad seal in one of the hubs. If your defroster is alway blowing, no matter where your ESOF is, then you leak is at you leak is between you vac pump and anywhere under you dash.
Start at the vacuum pump, then the canister, then just start tracing the lines back thru the fire wall and under the dash. There are several plastic connections that tend to break or come unplug. Pump will run with switch on engine off. First thing you need to check is make sure the pump is running. Should hear it, mounted on passenger side fender unless they moved it after 03.
I had that problem on my 2000 at 350. Everything went to defrost. There is a nipple on the hub that a vacuum line connects to and it's very possible that nipple has corroded and creating a vacuum leak. Try that

Good advise and from a member that sees the value of becoming a supporter in less than 67 post.
The vacuum solenoid for the ESOF also has been known to leak vacuum ... when it's off, it vents the hubs to the air. Somehow it gets dirt in it or something, and it leaks vacuum ...
Just keep that in mind when checking for leaks - it's more likely you have a broken hose somewhere. Better to try the free things first
If I read this correctly, his problems exist when not in four wheel drive, this would point to a problem with his in cab air system. This would be from the solenoid to the canister back to the pump then to the cabin air system. Start by undoing the line at the soleniod and plugging it. If problem still exist, the ESOF system is not the problem, or at least not all the problem. I'm betting it one of the cheap plastic tees under the dash. Good news is, most of the time you can hear and find them easy.

Right, the heat only come from the defroster all the time. The 4x4 wont engage unless I lock the hubs myself.
Is this a diesel or gasser? I only know the diesel side. Not sure if the gassers have a vacuum pump or comes off the manifold.
My vacuum pump died and I had the same symptoms. Dealer wanted about $145 for new one. Couldn't find a used one localy. Ended up buying a used one off of Ebay that was out of a Volvo. Paid less than $20 including shipping and still working after 2 years. Had to cut the connector off and crimp a couple of slide terminals on to make it work though.
