My 02 Escape 2wd Makes A Whriling/faint Grinding Noise When Turning Rt At Speeds Approx. 25mph And Up. Rotated Tires And Adjusted Air Pressure. I Dont Feel Its In The Tires. Removed The Drivers Tire/brake Rotor And Can't Really Tell If The Front Hub Bearing Is Bad. Feels Fine . If I Do Have To Replace The Hub Bearing Do I Need To Rent A Strut Compressor Since The Hub Seems To Be Pressed Into The Steering Knuckle. Any Info Will Be A Great Help
I just replaced my front left wheel bearing making the same grinding whirling noise. Yes the bearing is pressed on the hub. Most local machine shops will press the bearing on the hub for you. Usual charge 25-30 bucks. Replaced mine with a new bearing from O'reilly auto parts $35. Make sure to shop around for the bearing Autozone wanted $62 for the same part. Good luck.
Thanks Ford43, Did You Have To Use A Strut Compressor Or Is There Enough Drop In The Lower Arm To Remove Bolts From Strut Without A Compressor. I Have A Press To Remove Bearing, It Doesn't Look Like A Bad Job. Thanks.
I think it would be easier with a compressor. There is a lot of room but it is not as tight with the strut compressed. My bearing was completely gone and required a bit of tugging HA-HA and a few other words to come out. Just ensure that the bearing that you putting back in goes in straight. I took the assembly to my local shop where they pressed the new one in. I wish I would have had a press but had to fork over the 30 bucks to have it done. All in all it is not too bad of a job. Better than paying Ford no telling what to replace..
thanks for the info, i will be doing next week while on vacation. probably will just change both sides ( since it it it christmas and feel the need to throw some more money out the window) . AUTOZONE offers free tool rentals so i will get a strut compresser and then set up a wheel alignment when done.
I know the feeling about throwing money away. It is time for me to replace my cheapo ford rotors. The rotors on my escape are extremely thin. I have read in other posts about how they do not last at all. Mine has just under 100,000 in them I gues that is lucky. Changing those wheel bearings is not that bad of a job. Good luck with it. Merry Christmas.
