i am wondering if someone can tell me howe hard it is to replace the heater core in a 94 explorer, also is there any way to pull codes using a jumper wire and the check engine light?
Disconnect the hearer hoses from the heater core tubes. Remove the under dash cover (if it is there). Remove the heatercore access panel (three screws if I remember right) pull it down and toward you to remove it from the drain tube and then pull the heater core toward you then down. the last one took me about 10 -15 minutes to replace.
When putting the new one in, it's easier if you have a 2nd pair of hands to hold onto the nipples under the hood while you secure it under the glove box.
I had to use a block of wood to pry against and a 3 foot crowbar to get my heater hoses off. The rest was pretty easy. I did it on my '91 and on my '92. One of the cheap heater cores I bought leaked after a couple of years and the other is still OK. The replacement core is OK too. I guess that means there is a 1/3 chance of getting a bad one Or you can pay the $80 from the Ford dealer.
On the '91 and '92 you can get the codes using a jumper wire and a voltmeter. Not sure about the '94. At some point they made it so you could use a jumper and read flashes of the CEL but that may have been for the '95s or later.
