ok so i just got a 1990 ford f-150 xlt lariat for my grandfather.its got the 302 in it.it wasnt run much at all when he owned it especially in the pasyt 3-4 years.
while driving back from PA to MD the oil pressure went up past low.i know it can somtimes go past high and be fine but it went past low.i was told that the oil was so old and gunky that it could be clogging the oil pump.
so i got a new oil pump and we were about to put it in but we read that you have to lift the engine to get it out?
we tried just jacking it up from the ground but couldnt get enough leverage.
anyone have any suggestions?
and if im just an idiot dont bash me haah
It could be a clogged pickup screen, they're pretty common in these trucks.
The engine shouldn't have to come out, but it does need to get lifted up. I think it's probably best to do with a hoist, but I'm sure someone more experienced will chime in.
Have you checked to make sure the oil level is correct? Does it have any obvious leaks?
theres plenty of oil in it.and just to make sure we added more.
and theres no obvious oil leaks in it.but ill check out the pick up screen
ould that cause the oil pressure to go down?
im new to trucks and stuff so if i say stuopid stuff forgive me haha
When the oil pressure went low, did you hear any abnormal engine sounds? Mine gauge started moving around but had no symptoms of low oil pressure. Either check with mech gauge or replace the oil pressure sending unit.
eah there wre sounds...it wasnt knocking but it was clicking so impretty sure theres no oil gettingi nto the engine.
but i just want to get it fixed!!
its the first car i can call mine and i have it for not even a day and its got problems.
oh well...hopefully it will get fixed by sunday night
let me get this straight; so you drove a good distance with old oil/filter and you want it to work by sunday and you don't want any trouble from a vehicle that sat for the last 3-4 years?
that is a pretty tall order.
you are lucky it made it that far without seizing up, or the brake lines letting go, or a tire blowing out, or a rear shackle from breaking free.
first change that oil and filter, use a motorcraft filter.
second get mechanical oil gauge and check the pressure.
third get under that truck with a bright trouble light and really give it a good looking over for rust or bad parts.
i am sorry for the dose of reality but you will need more than a weekend to get to trust this vehicle.
i am very thankful for all your help
it hasnt been sitting for that long but not driven very much in that period of time.but it has had repairs over that time.
sounds like your not pumping oil...your pick up could be clogged or you oil pump could have gone bad. all you have to do is unbolt the motor mounts and jack it up for clearance. its a pain in the **** but its do-able.
