was the new process 435 4 speed a option for the 65 f100. the reason i ask, i know its not the org tranny and the previous owner cut a hole in the floor. i would like to patch this hole. is there a tranny hump that will fix this so i dont have to patch this area.
The NP435 was and is the correct 4spd trans in 65 2wd trucks and I believe some 4X4 as well...I also think 4wd used a couple of Warner trans. The trans code on the door tag for the NP trans is N
as I recall, G is for an automatic(Cruisematic) I dont recall what the codes are for the Warner trans or the three speed trans.
If the column has the shifter on the left and clutch pedals which I gather it has, then it was a 3 speed truck which was the standard offering.
Post the door tag info and those of us here can break it down for you.
i know its not org. the tag is stamped 8-1-81. my main problem is cleaning up the floor board were the last owner cut it up to make the shifter fit through. need to know if there is a hump that will fit or do i need to patch it.
Yes there is a hump that will cover it if you are going to stay with the four speed. Any 65 or 66 four speed will have one. If you pull up the floor covering you will see a pattern stamped in the floor where the hump fits. the hump itself has a square hole for the shifter to penetrate and the boot to mount and the four speed floor covering will acommodate the extra rise.
As long as the hole is cut within the boundaries of the stamped pattern the four speed hump will cover it.
i was under there bleeding brakes and it looks he kept withen the patern.
F600 and larger trucks all had holes cut into the floor for the shifters. If the Transmatic (Allison) automatic was present, Ford made a filler piece to cover the hole in the floor. Also check out any other big trucks like LN or C series (tilt cabs) with automatics...Ford made filler pieces for those too.
There were two different floor plates used, one for floor stick shift vehicles and one for autos. If I remember correctly, you can scrouge up any plate from 65-76 to work on your floor (the cab floor was slightly different in 61-64).
if you wanna fix the hole and depending on how the PO cut the hole, in the floor theres a 3/8 depressed groove all around the trans area...thats the area where Ford punched out leaving a lil flange for the clips and bolts to bolt the cover plate on...I had a 66 with a 3spd someone had cut a hole in the floor downwards from the area supposed to be cut...I put in a 4spd and patched the hole and used the top plate from donor trans truck..a 65...that metal there is major structure...no way tin snips will cut it if you are contemplating that...I tried and killed my tin snips and didnt get very far cutting..
Don't cut the groove! Instead, cut about a half inch inside the groove. Also, there are indents spaced around the cutout section. Cut around these also leaving them attached to the floor. these are the bosses where the hump screws down to the floor.
So basically you will have a rectangular hole with several tabs extending into it.
The edge of the hump fits in the groove to help seal it. You'll need the hump you are going to use for a drill pattern to mark the screw holes to hold it down.
I'd suggest finding the hump piece before doing any cutting. Once you have it to compare to it all becomes pretty self explanatory.
