Question 4 speed to zf conversion ???

I Have a 79 F-150 4x4 with a 400 ci and a 4 speed manual trans. I want to put a zf 5 speed (S542 or S547) in it.

1. Is this possible?

2. If so, what do I have to do?

you would need the zf from a 460 that should bolt up to your 400 and then it would just be figureing out how to mount the slave to the firewall and you pedal and moding the driveshaft and mount/xmember

Check the 73-79 forum for a thread called "the ZF has landed" This guy put one in without converting to hydraulic clutch.

If you use a zf for 460 or diesel zf the slave cyl. for hydralic clutch ic external and you can adapte your manual linkage, but the zf need a lot less clutch travel than the old 4sp. I put a zf5 in my 82 c/w hyd clutch but not without some major clutch pedal changes to fit hyd master cyclinder on firewall. well worth the change the zf is great.
