97 thermostat change

97 thermostat change

hi guys my dad just replaced the thermostat on his 97 4.6 when he removed the old thermostat he said he lost about hlaf a gallon of coolant after putting in the new one we cant seem the get the fluid level to go down in the resivior and the heat doesnt seem like its getting as warm as it used to either. any ideas on why this is happening?

Two things come to mind. Either the thermostat was install backwards or else there is an air pocket trapped in there. I would suspect the air pocket first though since this happens all too often when changing out tstats. Good luck and hope this helps.

Sounds like the system is air bound. Have you let the engine warm up until the thermostat opens? The resivoir is connected to the radiator so until the thermostat opens the system cannot completely purge all the air out. Sometimes it takes a while to burp all of the air out.

Did you run the truck to operating tempurature without cap on to bleed the air out or did you just dump 1/2 gallon into overflow bottle?
