it says bank one and bank two are runing lean since it is runing lean I assume that these error have to do with O2 sensor am I right and if so which would it be the two pre cats or post cats? I have a 98 expedition xlt tow pack. 5.4L
I had the same codes after changing 02 sensors before cat on both sides. After reading around the forum it points to MAF sensor or PCV tube where it takes a 90 bend. I checked my PCV hose and all was well, then I checked the MAF sensor and the filaments were completeley covered in gook. I cleaned with MAF cleaner from Pep Boy's and they are now silver and shiny and I have no CEL anymore. I was using a K&N filter for years and was thinking maybe the oil in the K&N filter was being pulled in and coating those filaments on the MAF. But as for now my Bank 1 & Bank 2 lean codes have been resolved.
Just an FYI on the P0171 & P0174 codes...... It has been around two months since I cleaned the MAF sensor with some cleaner I picked up at Pep Boy's and my CEL has not come on since then. I fought those codes for months and the MAF cleaning definitly resolved it!

This may sound funny but I've heard quite a few times where a loose or poor sealing gas cap can cause readings on your O2 sensors. So that's the first thing I'd check before you go to pulling your sensors.
Well I did have a few bad vacuum hoses in the truck, specifically the one that goes from intake to the spider web split of 1 million hoses $50.00 dealer part and problem taken care.
I just had the same codes four days ago on my 98 ford expedition. I removed the MAF sensor and cleaned it with carb cleaner, replaced it, erased the codes and the check engine light have not come back on. I have driven it over 150 mile in the last four days. I took the cheap route first and it worked.
hi to everyone I just got and 1998 expedition but fail the smog and codes are p0171 and p0174, also the check engine indicator doesn’t work because every time I turn on the key it doesn’t light up like it suppose to, please help…… thanks <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
if the truck is running lean, you have already cleaned your MAF, so go after your vacuum lines specially the one that comes from your PCV sometimes they start leaking. and if all hell fails you will be looking into getting 4 new O2 Bosh sensors. good luck let me know what happens
