I have a factory system which I want to upgrade with an amp and new speakers. Are component speakers worth the extra money? Would 3 way speakers be sufficient? My goal is to improve sound quality and not win competitions. I currently have the 6 disc player without the sub woofer. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Yes they are if installed correctly. They allow you to place the tweeter into a better location. It will also keep the mid bass from distorting the tweeter.
I would also like to hear / see what people have had positive experiences with. I only have the single disc CD player and would like to upgrade the whole system. Are there any factory looking head units available? What about finding a Factory Nav unit with the 6 disc? Is that even possible? I seen on trucks that a company makes a set of subs that fit very nicely under the rear seat (Super Crew) but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the manufacturer.

Whenever I get a new car for myself or the wife the first thing I do is gut the stock stereo system. My F150 was no different. I've had good luck with the Polk Audio Coaxial 5x7 speakers, but nothing sounds better than a good set of Component speakers. I run JL Audio components up front and Polks in the back, both 5x7's. The front door offers a place to install the separate tweeters and the imaging is excellent.
All four doors are powered by a Pioneer AVIC-Z2 Navigation system and I've got a 10" JL Audio sub in a custom enclosure under the rear seat powered by an amp located under the passenger seat. The system sounds very clear and I get compliments on the sound and staging often. I listen to more progressive music and jazz and I get no distortion at high volume levels. Pics in my gallery.
If you want to block bass just get an in line bass blocker I have seen them in crutchfield. As long as you run the max RMS to a 2 or 3 way speaker they should not distort it is lack of power that causes distortion.
