For a few months now I've had a rattle coming from my cats but it goes away as long as the truck isn't idling. Since I first noticed it, I've noticed my gas mileage getting worse and worse (about 50 miles less per tank now). The truck seems slightly more sluggish but almost unnoticable but that could be because I'm lighter on the throttle because I'm trying to get better mileage. Could the cats be the problem? Are they starting to get clogged? I'm not getting any codes thrown either. If it's not the cats what could the problem be? It's a 2002 with a 4.6. Please help, gas is killing me.
Sounds like you could have one partially clogged. Most muffler shops can check this.
The lower mileage could also be from the winter blends of gasoline that are less efficient than summer blends.
My mileage has been bad since mid August and it's only getting worse. I've re-programmed my truck because of new tires I put on it and that didn't do it. Cleaned the air filter and the MAS and that didn't do it. I'm at a loss if it isn't a clogged cat.
wow 50 miles per tank??? Really???
thats not good at all!
Yeah, it's bad! When my truck was stock I got an average of about 390 miles per tank, depending on driving conditions. Then I lifted it and put 35" tires on it, re-geared it (4:56's), and I averaged about 315-320 miles per tank. Now I'm lucky to get 270 miles per tank now.
thats not good..you need to get that checked asap because my lightning gets better than 270 miles and you're in a 4.6....man your getting robbed..get that checked quick because gas is becoming a beast

I can go to a muffler shop to get the cat checked but if it's not the cat then who would I take it to to find out the other possible problem? The Ford dealerships out in my area seem lazy who don't care to look into the problem.
if them lazy bums from ford in your area wont do it then tell like hey i need you guys to check this out..but take it to any dealership like chevy or dodge or something..they may not have the tools for our vehicles but maybe they will be better to help you atleast know what the problem is..you know..but yeah i hope for the best..the people at ford my way are some awesome people..but like i said i wish you the best of luck man
If you are hearing rattles from inside your cat(s)? Pretty safe bet the honeycomb material has broken down and cracked apart. This can cause a host of problems. If the exhaust can not exit out as intended? It can create a bit more back pressure, sometimes a heck of a lot of back pressure..and you'll be having a loss of performance and increased fuel use due to having to keep the pedal down more to maintain speed.
An exhaust shop is your best bet to have it checked. Normally they will use a temp sensor---most likely they will wait for it to cool down, and slap it to listen for rattles.
