Just a thought

I was just thinking to myself how easily someone could make some good money by marketing some of the "backyard engineered" modifications people have come up with here. For instance, making a package for the 19# injector upgrade with everything you need, or the EGR restrictor plate that eliminates the lean condition on 92-93's, which causes what feels like a miss at certain engine speeds.

I'm suprized the guys at Clifford's haven't picked up on some of this stuff. Most of the trial and error has already been done for them, so they could just do some final tweeking, get a spiffy package for it and presto, instant money maker!

the biggest problem with these types of backyard solutions is the government regulations you have to meet to market them.

The only thing you gotta do is get CARB certified. If you pass Cali anywhere else is less stringent. Even then, you could still sell it with the "this product not for use on pollution controled motor vehilces" (which really means "we know you're gonna use it, just dont get caught") Traildawg's right on this one. Even go further and get some computer programing in there...got yourself a set-up.

hey, another thought. Anyone thought of making a v-8 throttle body attach to the I-6 manifold? stock one on the 6 seems kinda dinky for that displacement. Prolly mentioned this before, but I don't remember what anybody said. If anything, edelbrock's engineers need to get off their butts and make a new intake manifold for the 6. they got one for the efi 302's and 351's.

The V8 throttle bodies won't fit as the throttle bores on the I6 intake are to small and there isn't enough material there to machine them out to the V8's diameter. The only way you could mount one up would be to make a custom spacer that has cone-shaped bores that taper down from the V8 throttle bore size to the intake bore size. For more info on this, check out my post further down the list entitled "Fun with Throttle Bodies Part 1".

I agree, it would be nice if some of the aftermarked companies would offer ANY products for the 4.9L. Even finding a custom fix set of plug wires is a pain. The problem is that the 4.9L isn't considered a performance engine. Even in the book I just bought "Performance Tuning and Modifying Your Ford Fuel Injection" doesn't mention the 4.9L, even though they have the 1.8L Mazda/Ford 4cyl. in it.

That's my reasoning behind writing that preamble to the 19# injector article, and putting it up for free, information-only.

Not so much to be funny, but to keep my hiney out of the sling. Yours, too.

Tampering with emission controls is a Federal offense, and I betcha the no-sense-of-humor emissions ***** could construe fooling with an EFI system as "tampering". Yeah, you can probably get it past the retards at local level by turning down the fuel pressure (I personally will find that out here in a cuple of months), but I'm way paranoid about someone on a Federal level who has a clue looking at those pretty orange injectors!
