I get up around 4 am, already in the high desert (lucky me) and think it will be clear, we're expecting a low of 15. Maybe I'll see something on the way in! BTW SteveBricks, (slightly OT, sorry) do you go out to watch the shuttle landings?
I used to hear them too, always seemed to be in the middle of a workday, when I couldn't drive out there. OK, back to topic! Where in the desert will you go to watch the meteor shower? We used to go to the top of Mt. Pinos in Fraizer Park. Not exactly the desert, but the highest point around.
I'll go out to the back side of the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base to a place called Giant Rock near Landers.(Remember the earthquake)?
No houses around and no towns of any size very near,so it's pretty dark. It's a good compromise of driving all the way to Death Valley,it's only about a hour and 45 min. or 2 hour drive rather than 5 and a half or 6 hours.
Took the telescope with camera attachment out around Midnight..but, We had clouds last night and I almost froze my butt off going out every 10-15 minutes.
Maybe it will be clear tonight.
