1995 5.0 - adding CatBak

Ok... just got my CatBak system in from Summit and ready to put on this weekend. I got under there and there appears to be two cats, or either it's one cat and a 'resonator' downstream from the first cat. I'm searched and read the other threads but am still uncertain. My CatBak has a 1 into two muffler then dual pipes run out the back.

Should I take the second cat/resonator off or leave it on? From what I've read I'm not so sure it would matter much at all. I want it with a nice low rumble, and getting loud when I stomp on it, but I don't want it obnoxiously loud. It's a stock truck engine / exhaust except for the K&N FilterCharger I added to it.

Also.... how do I know IF my cats and/or resonator is clogged up and needs replacing!?!?! Might as well do it while I'm here if it needs it. And what does a "resonator" do anyway? I understand the function of two cats with the air input between them, etc.... but if it isn't two cats and that last hunk is a resonator.... what's THAT do?

Thanks guys!!!

They are bolth cats. IMHO if you want to see ANY improvement from the cat back, you also want to change the Ypipe, and cats. The stock Y is TERRABLE!!! Tiny pipes, and bad bends.

I would def take the second cat out....DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE and wether you have to pass SMOG. How many miles are on your motor/exhaust and has your cats ever been changed? I think I had to do mine inbetween the 90-100K mark. If your rackin up the miles on your motor most likely they are close to clogged and it will go soon anyway. So I would swap it out for a high perf one. It will def complement your new exhaust....even if its just a normal (unclogged) cat.

Well... maybe I'll just wait to put it on until I can buy me a new cat then. As far as I know and it looks under there, it's all OEM. My truck has 164k on it. <huge grin> and still runs like a top. Just replaced the Wires and Plugs, Distributor cap and rotor today just for the helluvit. Wasn't running bad, but I can tell an improvement afterwards.

Crappit. Guess I'll Have to get a cat and then have a new y-pipe put on, etc... maybe they have those at Summit. I'll look.

Here is why you need a better Y......

You can put the best muffler, cat, and pipes behind it. But with that cork the extra flow is worthless.

Ok you gurus.... what do I do now? I'm getting depressed. Is there somewhere I can order a BOLT ON y-pipe and cat so I can hook my catbak system up? Or even a y-pipe with a straight pipe comin around so I can hook it up? Am I screwed?.... needing now to just punt and order a full system?

Maybe I can cut a hole in the side and get all that honeycomb crap out and then weld it back. hehehe

Nopper. Right off of my 95Bronco!!!!!! I am replacing it with a homemade Y using 2.5" mandral bends, and a Flowmaster 2into 1 collector.

Talk to a local exhaust shop. They should be able to make a y-pipe and cat section pretty cheap. Just let them know what you're looking for.
