I checked the Turbo wheel for play and felt a slight amount of side to side play but very little. I felt no in and out play. Blades looked good and I did not see any problems with the housing near the blades.

I took the truck out for another test drive... The noise is most noticeable when going 35 to 45mph and when applying just a little bit of power so the truck is under a slight load. Now this noise is not real loud to begin with just enough to let you know something is going on. So when you let off the gas the noise is reduced to maybe 20%. Putting the trans in neutral takes a load off so the noise level goes down but you can still hear it. The noise is still there if you are in overdrive or not..

I jacked up the truck and let the wheels spin but its pretty noisy under there anyway (torque converter) and could not isolate anything particular. I did not want to get near the rear drive shaft carrier bearing with those spinning tires but when truck was stopped I did push on it and there is some movement but dont know how much is normal.

I may take the truck to a driveline shop and have them look at it. Once I get this solved I may start thinking about replacing the rattling torque converter.

Took the truck to a diesel Mechanic today. He and another mechanic jacked it up and climbed underneath with a creaper put the truck in gear and said the noise was coming from the rear end. He suggested a bearing kit including bearings for both rear axles. He said he could not say what shape the ring and pinion are in until he gets in there. I told him to order the parts.

Like I said the truck only has 63,000 K on it but when I bought the truck new at 23,000 they had to put a rear end clutch Pak in it because the truck had been sitting for a while (the previous owner paid for it). Guess that is why the low mileage. Maybe they did not put it back together right? Dont know about the cost yet but gotta be cheaper than a Turbo or Trans... Hope it fixes it, I will let you know.

Ok,,,,, Its fixed... It was the carrier bearings in the differential. I went ahead and and had all the bearings replaced with timken bearings...Pinion, Carier, Axles. Ring and Pinion gears were OK... One of the carrier bearings was really bad with pitted race and rollers. The pinion inner and outer race showed signs of wear but no pitting. I am going to pose a question at the top of the page on what this should have cost... I want to see if I got hose or not...
Thanks for the input

Doug
