I have a C-6 3 speed mated to a 300 l-6 and I'm thinking about going to an overdrive tranny. What all modifications whould I have to do to put one in? I would like to be able to go 70 (so I don't get run over) and keep my engine rpms down in the 2000 range instead of somewhere around 3200 running.

What gear ratio is the rearend? The C6 is a good stout transmission and the 300 a good engine. Don't believe either is your problem. My guess is you are running 4.10 gears in the rearend. Consider going lower, maybe 3.50 etc. You do lose the ability S.T.O.P if you go lower but it is a good trade off if you do a lot of freeway driving.
J.E.T. Performance sells complete conversion kits (including a stand alone computer to control the trans) for the AODE and E4OD transmissions. You can read a complete article discussing these swaps at:

What does the Acronym S.T.O.P stand for?
