98 4X4 issues with fr driveshaft
Just a heads up to y'all.
We have had some work done on our 98 reg cab short box 4x4 with 4.2 and manual 5 sp this past week. One thing that was discovered that we were not aware of is that the slip joint in the front drive shaft was seized solid. No amount of penetrating oil and heat would loosen it so we got a replacement from a dismantler. I don't think it is a good thing to have this solid as it must put extra stress on the transfer case and front diff. If you have not checked your truck lately, it may be a good idea to do so. Our truck has about 125K miles on it. We really hadn't noticed any issues in daily driving. It was only when trying to remove the driveshaft for some other work (had to replace the clutch slave ) that this was discovered.

Good Question. I am not sure. I guess you could loosen off one end of the drive shaft and pry against the flange. Another alternative might be to jack up the truck and watch to see if the driveshaft moves.
I gather there are at least a couple of different driveshafts available. Our original one did not have a bellows over the slip joint but apparently the replacement does. Not sure if that means the replacement if from a newer truck or not. My b-in-l is the mechanic doing the work and I have not been out to the shop to look at it.
