'91 F350 dually. In other posts, I've been trying to figure out why my truck won't start. The possibility is I installed the mechanical lift pump wrong. I loosened the fuel line going into the filter, cranked the engine several times and no fuel is coming out! Looking at my Haynes manual, it said 'suspect a faulty switchover valve'. Where do I look for it, do they go bad very often?
To check initial operation switch it between tanks...there should be an audible ZZIIPP as it changes tanks..... and the guage should change..check fuses and the switch.
The pump's on my list. Although aside from the hard starting, it ran fine for awhile after I replaced it. Truthfully, I'd rather take a good beating than wrestle that dam... pump again.
Several people have mentioned before the importance of correct lift pump installation. I don't know the details though.
The selector is under the driver's seat inside the frame rail.
Do you see any leaks and/or smell fuel?
How much fuel do you have. Is it less than 1/3 in either tank? If so, you may have run out if the fuel pickup tube inside the tank has fallen off or broke. Do you get any from the other tank?
If the selector is broken, then you could be drawing from either tank or even pumping from one to another (could be drawing from one tank and returning to the other). You may try dumping a few gallons in both tanks, if all else fails.
Also, be careful not to crank on the starter for more than 20 seconds without waiting two minutes in between. Changing an overheated starter isn't fun, especially paying for it
