I’m deploying to Okinawa Japan for three years. I know there are problems with rust in the turbo. Can any of you give me some advice on prepping the truck for long-term storage or should I just have somebody drive it once a week?
The truck is a 2006 F-350 CC 6.0 FX4 DRW. It will be stored in a barn in Springfield MO.
I have some methods to store gas engines long term (using marine fogging oil) but I don't think they would work with a diesel engine. I don't think you could shut down the engine while spraying fogging oil into the intake.
I would seal the air intake and the exhaust with heavy trash bags, remove the batteries, treat the fuel with a diesel fuel storage additive, seal the interior, put out mouse traps and hope for the best.
Your biggest problem will be fuel degradation, but additives will cure that.
Do a seach for Caterpillar VCI oil. We do this when shipping diesel engines overseas (Australia mainly), 8 weeks from dock to dock by seatainer. If you dont come up with anything, personal e-mail me and I will send you the document. Philip.
The Corps won't let you ship it overseas with you? That should be option #1. Option # 2 I would leave it with someone you trust and keep it on the road and have a few miles put on it ever week to keep things moving. My current truck sat for most of the year I was deployed to Iraq, the wife used it a few times, but it is worse for wear now from sitting idle than with daily use. I feel your pain, sucks to have to leave it behind. Option # 3, You could also consider selling it and then saving the money from the sale and add the money you save for no use, insurance ect for three years then but w NEW 2011 or 2012 when you return. Option # 4 storgae... I am sure someone of FTE will have your answer on how to store your SD for 3 years, sure sucks, best of luck too you, be safe! Ranger's Lead The Way!!!
Thanks all for the info.
I wish I could take a vehicle to Okinawa but Japan has very strict import laws when it comes to American vehicles.
Looks like my best bet is to have my Father drive the truck hard once a week.
The advisory concerning the diesel engines makes a good point.
What I’ve found so far;
Putting the vehicle up on blocks or over inflating the tires by ten PSI will help from getting flat spots and pre-mature tire failure when you do drive it again.
A diesel fuel stabilizer is a must with a full tank.
I can’t find an Engine Fogging Spray for diesels because if you try to spray it in the engine during cranking it will start to run off the stuff. The best bet is to start the engine and let it run twenty minutes ten at idle and with the BCP mod installed idle it for another ten at 1200 RPM. I think once a week should be ok.
Change all the fluids before storing the vehicle to remove all the acids and prevent any damage.
Have a good wax job done to the vehicle.
Use a good car cover.
Also, get a large handfull of ordinary charcol briquets in a pie tin, place them on the floor of your interior to absorb odors. (Don't get the kind you light with a match)
Don't forget rodent control. The mice will eat your wiring.
I want to reinforce Redford's concern about critters.
The last time my unit was activated, I put my 2002 SD in a barn/workshop in the back of the house. Hardly anyone went in there the 15 months I was gone. Squirrels built homes both under the hood, and in the frame areas. They chewed up lots of stuff, including some fairly hard plastics. It was pretty bad.
(We have a no-discharge ordinance in my town, but I don't care, I'm at war with squirrels. I sneak out into the back with a rimfire that I mounted a scope on, and pick 'em off. I'm like Carl in CaddyShack. lol)
I've been listening to rumors for months about another tour. It seemed for sure in the fall, turned out to be an Army National Guard unit from NJ. Rumors still are that they want to rotate mountain units into Afganistan, and that would be me. If so, I'm going to work something out with a kid on the block to drive it sometimes ... he's a good kid, nice girlfriend.
