Oil Pressure

Hi-

This is more of a general question, but I'm curious in light of some of the previous posts about oil pressure.

Basically, what causes oil pressure. Obviously the oil pump, but I've heard worn main bearings can contribute to low oil pressure. How are the main bearings generating oil pressure and what other factors might contribute?

Oil Pressure

When the main bearings are worn the oil that normally lubricates them gets bled off & thus the oil pressure is reduced . Its basically the same as having a hole in a pipe , some of the pressure is lost .

Oil Pressure

I think you are asking why worn bearings allow low oil pressure. Think of the oil system like the hose in your garden. the pump is the like the waterpressure supplied to the house. When water is flowing (or oil is pumping) and you kink the end, not enough to cut supply, just enough to increase pressure the pressure increases. when you remove the kink the water pressure goes down. Now apply this to the oil pump and the main bearings. oil is forced through tiny grooves to supply oil to the entire bearing surface. Wear increases the gap (removing the kink in the hose)and lowers oil pressure. I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I haven't.
