I went to my local dealer to price my upstream and down stream 02 sensors.
About 124 for each one. The parts guy said that it has to be calibrated. How do I go about this - is it to be done after installation or does the sensors have to match the old ones.
This is for my 96 FSB with the 5.8.
Codes were for "heater" on sensors and also for a lean condition.
I also need to clean my MAF. I just need to get to the projects when I have time.
The Bronco still runs rough at idle, but it starts just fine.
Never heard of that. Tons of threads here about replacing the 02's and none mentioned "calibration". No idea what he means other than it has to be the right one for your truck.
FYI: Per some of those threads the Bosch 02 is a direct or "equal to" replacement and costs less than dealer. Can be bought on-line at Summit Racing and Advance carries them in stock. Everyone that used them said they were good.
The downstream sensor has no effect on the motor's operation, don't bother replacing it. There is no sensor calibration.. that's an unscrupulous shop trying to ripoff the customer with bogus charges. A lean condition suggests your O2 sensors are in fact working properly and your problem lies elsewhere. Check the EGR and air injection systems for leaks and rusted or broken plumbing, as well as the exhaust system upstream of the O2 sensors.
I wonder if he is referring to when you make changes the computer has to "re-learn" all the baselines from the sensors.... In that case you don't need to do anything but run the truck through different speed ranges... Basically drive the truck around at various throttle positions.
Mind you I'm no FI expert, just things I've read...
Conanski, by check the EGR do you mean do all the bench tests or just buy a new one. I'll check for leaks again tomorrow and possibly get a new EGR and go from there. I think the upstream 02 sensors are less expensive than the EGR.
The truck has been sitting for awhile - so I need to check out many other items too.
