I have a 1968 F100 2wd with the 240-6, NP435 and a 3.73 dif. I have added a set of Clifford headers and 2.5" exhaust and glasspaks, a Pertronix ingnition and coil. I plan on upgrading to a 300 six with a Clifford intake manifold, 270 cam, and a 390 or 500cfm carb. I have a problem with the wide ratios of the NP435 tranny and would like to swap to a fully syncro trans preferably with an overdrive. I don't do any heavy hauling with this truck and drive mostly on L.A.'s freeways. Can anyone suggest some alternative tranny's that would be an easy swap preferably retaining the stock clutch set-up? Has anyone used these combination of parts before? My dif. is a 3.73 but I noticed that many of you are using 2.73 do you still maintain good acceleration? My RPM,s on the freeway are about 3000 at 65mph and I'm only getting about 12mpg with the one barrel carb and stock intake. Thanks for your help!
I've got a '96 F150 with the 5 speed manual. I've had no problems with it and I drive it fairly hard. The only problems that the transmition shop has seen were breaks to the roll pin in the shifter. Hurst sells a performance shifter for this transmition.
Keep the 3.73 gears. Most of us that have 2.73 gears wish we had the 3.73's that you have, better power and very little loss in MPG.
Thanks for the reply Phat 96. Do you know what the model designation is for your 5speed so I can look for a match? Running with your 5 speed do you still have problems with the 2.73diff? I thought that the 5speed would have filled the gap and given you better mileage at the same time.
