There is a 1960 223 engine with 3 speed transmission on ebay. Says it has 61,000 miles on it and it runs. It is reasonably close by about a 4 hour drive. I was planning to rebuild my oun 223 that came with my 54 f100. I don't know the condition of mine. I bought my truck as a work in progress from a guy who also never had it running. I also like the idea of using the 3 speed instead of my 4 speed so the shifter will be on the tree. I have a 56 column with shift linkage. Is there any major difference in the two engines? Will it bolt in? Will my clutch linkage work with the new tranny? Will my driveshaft fit? Thanks
Bob
To bad you aren't closer to Indiana. I have a rebuilt 223, out of my 54, that I would let go very cheap just to see it go. I put a Linclon running gear under mine and never put the 223 back in.
According to my books they should be a direct replacement.

The 60 three speed is a little different than a 53-56 3 speed. The clutch linkage will not bolt to the side of the trans as the "bosses" have been eliminated of the 57-60 3 speed trans.
56 column is 1" shorter than a 53-55 column.
drive shaft will be different too.
If it were me I'd use the 4 speed and its a bolt in swap for the engine.
Thanks Max and Kevin. Max I to wish I was closer! I'd take you up on that motor. It's a long way from Massachusetts to Indiana. Darn. Kevin, thanks for the info on the transmission. The 4 speed is OK but I was hoping to free up the middle from the floor shifter.
