I just bought a 94 Ranger from a person I am acquainted with. The hydraulic clutch was slipping just a bit at first, but after 2 weeks it was slipping a lot. I had it towed to a transmission shop and he said it needed and installed a clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder. Cost $958.00. Ironically, when I told the seller what happened, he told me he had just had the same service from the same guy!! Now you need to know that 18 months had passed but, the truck had only travelled 1300 miles between the 2 clutch changes!! What I would like feedback on is wether it is possible to wear out a clutch in 1300 miles? Please let me know your thoughts, robee3@hotmail.com or this forum would be great. MANY THANKS.
If the mechanic did not do the job properly, or used very cheap chinese products the first time, yea, it could go out in 1300 miles. Did you get some kind of work warranty with it? I used to pick up brake rotors in Long Beach Ca. that went to distributors for independent mechanics. They were very thin chinese imports that were not turnable as they were cheap metal.
The mechanic said no warranty because of different owners. The clutch I just put in is already riding pretty high after 200 miles. There also seems to be about 1.5 inches of free play at the top.
if you dont know how to properly drive a clutch you can burn one up good in a day, but it seems something is amiss there.. prolly the cheapest stuff you can get ..i use a trans shop for that kind of work with someone who knows how do do the job blindfolded

Doing the job blindfolded may be the problem here.
There was no burned clutch smell. I do not know what gave out the 2nd time because I did not suspect foulplay until after he serviced the clutch an I started to compare notes. I will have a quailified mechanic redo the clutch because it is almost at the top again. I still need to settle with the old guy because I stopped payment on the check when I realized the 2nd new clutch was not right. He said he did not cheat me and wants his $958.00. I will probably have to pay, but I am not happy about it.
Yes, I would have expected you to mention it in the first post if there was a burnt clutch smell. Did he return the old parts to you?
Check with someone who knows the legal aspects of this too - stopping payment on a check in this case may well be illegal. If it makes you the bad guy you've got no chance to get your money back. You'll probably have to pay him and then go to small claims court if you want to recover the money.
But I'd think the guy owes you some answers either way. Changing owners may invalidate a warranty, but it shouldn't cause parts to fail. And I can see bad parts causing a premature failure, but if it's already happening again on a second set of parts...
You can take out a clutch in a minute, rev it up real high and dump it. I dout thats is whats happened here. Like others; I dout it was installed right the first time. Also if you ride the clutch constantly they won't last long.
