Hello , My 04,crew f350, has a new sound. After listening to it for acouple weeks , I finnaly had the 13yr old sit in the driver seat and move the powered up steering back and forth afew times ,I found the source of the tiny symphony to be the lower ball joint. Its making a crisp rapid creeking sound. Pinpionted with a mech stethosope.
My question though is, to what exstint this sound generation is actually indicating a bad joint. I,ve replaced balljoints on my 84 1T before, but never had the joints chatter like this before or after replacment? The stock units on my rig are nonserivicable units , but in a feeble attempt to remove possible seal source i did apply some penitrating oil. Yikes.
Hum. Before submiting this thread and blasting off to pick up the kids , I hadn't gotten to read prev. threads. . Sounds like replacing the balljoints is a safe bet , But really , as creeky as it is ( only for about 1/2 or 3/4 of full turn from center both ways ) does anyone thats replaced them as soon this starts found the joints in terminall mode , or just slightly dry ? Should I enlist a pry bar to check looseness at this point or can this creek most likelly chill till spring?
Through other threads here. I have found some real informative documents on things like, hub servicing , brake replacement and such, does any one have a walk though for balljoints, documented with pics, link available for viewing?
Thanks for a great Forum.
the ball joint on the drivers side would creak. i bought a grease gun needle at advanced auto parts for $3 and injected grease into the ball joint. noise is gone. its been about 9 months now. may not be the best fix but it worked.
