hello. I Have a 1989 F250 4x4 with Heavy duty towing. Today i put it in 4 wheel and as i drive thiers a high pitched cherp coming from the drivers side front wheel. sounds like a bird singing lol. got out freed up the hub and its gone. put it back in and the cherp is back. everything seams to be working right nothing getting hot or leaking nothing else i can find wrong. This something i should worry about? ideas on what it could be?
u-joints dont chirp. they pop and then its done. broken no movement from whatever they were pushing. I would start by looking at all of your axle carrier bearings and the rest of the bearings on that side of the axle. Is it a constant screeching?? Or does it only do it on bumps??? or under power??? It could just be a bad bushing somewhere. Check for play in that side. If you find play you'll likely find the culprit.
HAH! Not true my friend. Use the search function on this site and you'll see COUNTLESS threads about guys who had chirps and squeaks in their driveline caused by a bad u-joint.
but my guess would definetly be the axle bearings because it only does it when in 4wd and hubs locked which means it only does it when the front axle turns. in 2wd the front axle doesnt turn so there would be no screeching. This happens when bearings are shot and metal starts rubbing metal.

The u-joints are also ONLY turning when in 4wd... So what makes you think it's not a possibility?
I just think it would be an awful shame to tear apart his differential and rebuild it only to find that the squeaking was coming from a lousy 30 minute u-joint job all along... If it were me, I'd replace the easy/cheap stuff FIRST.
The wheel bearing are always turning so that's not is.
The only bearing on the drive axle are in the U-joint and in the differential. The bearing in the diff are bathed in oil so they won't dry out unless you loose all the diff fluid. The U-joints on the other hand are infamous for drying out.
Sure sounds like a U-joint problem to me, anyways even if it is not, they are a good thing to always have replaced, cuz it seems that it is a law that it will go out when you need it most.
Thanks for the information guys. The cherping is constant as long as i am in 4 wheel and it lets up some when i let off the gas and gets louder and faster as i speed up. I hope it is the U joint i can handle that fix. The dif worrys me a bit i never have tore into one of them.
