I'm just glad to see Wyatt didn't get a Honda for his senior project! I find these trucks stop great with discs up front and manual brakes. I've done this on my '66 and '71. Good luck on the project.

You'll find that egotistical sword fighting is an extremely common thing, Wyatt. Especially when dealing in projects which require judgement concerning so many different skills. When faced with dicisions such as these, especially where your and others safety is concerned(believe me, a damaged I beam bracket is a serious safety issue) always choose the safest option.
I'm 45 now and have been working as a metal and pipe fabricator, fitter and weldor since I was 20 and I've seen far too many "mechanics" structural repairs fail leaving me to fix the fix.
Your metals teacher may have seen something that your mechanics teacher could not so it sounds to me you followed your instincts and made a good choice. Continue to excercise good judgement and you will do well.
Have your metals teacher look at the bracket and explain why he suggested replacing the piece. You may be surprised at what he shows you.
